Elgoibar lies in the western
area of the Gipuzkoa province, bordering on Biscay. Set in the
Deba River Valley, 13 kilometres upstream from the river's mouth,
the town is surrounded by mountains with steep slopes above
all towards the south.
Elgoibar, like Eibar, is one of the major urban centres in the
Gipuzkoa province. The town has grown overwhelmingly from the
1950s onwards, due to its industrial development that drew a
crowd of immigrants at that time.
Most of the inhabitants live in the city centre and its new
suburbs, whereas there are very few families scattered in the
rest of the municipality.
